The University of Connecticut women’s basketball team continued its winning streak with a dominant victory over the University of South Florida on Sunday. The Huskies have now won 20 consecutive games and the team showed no signs of slowing down against the Bulls.
The game started with a strong showing by UConn’s offense, with the team scoring the first 8 points of the game. From there, the Huskies never trailed throughout the entire game, going on to win by a final score of 67-47.
The Huskies were led by their defense, which held the Bulls to just 34.5% shooting from the field and caused several turnovers. The offense was also firing on all cylinders, with four players scoring in double figures. Sophomore Christyn Williams led the way with 19 points, followed by junior Olivia Nelson-Ododa with 16 points, senior Evina Westbrook with 12 points, and freshman Paige Bueckers with 10 points.
The victory was especially significant for the Huskies, as it marked their 100th straight regular season conference win. UConn has now won 8 consecutive American Athletic Conference championships and is the clear favorite to win its 9th straight this season.
The Huskies’ streak has not gone unnoticed, and the team is once again ranked #1 in the country in both the AP and Coaches polls. The team has overcome several obstacles this season, including COVID-19-related pauses and injuries to key players, but has continued to find ways to win.
Head coach Geno Auriemma has led the team to 11 national championships during his tenure at UConn and is undoubtedly one of the greatest coaches in women’s college basketball history. Auriemma’s focus on player development and team chemistry has allowed the Huskies to maintain their dominance even as other programs have closed the gap.
With just a few games left in the regular season, the Huskies are poised to make another deep run in the NCAA tournament. The team’s combination of talent, experience, and coaching make them a force to be reckoned with and a favorite to win the national championship. As the winning streak continues, it’s clear that the UConn women’s basketball team is a program built for sustained success.
