The University of Connecticut (UConn) women’s basketball team had an outstanding season in 2021, finishing with a record of 28-2. The team also won the Big East regular-season and tournament championships. As a result of their success, several UConn women’s basketball players were honored with individual awards.
Paige Bueckers, a freshman guard, was named the AP Women’s Basketball National Player of the Year. Bueckers had a remarkable season, averaging 20.0 points, 5.8 assists, and 4.9 rebounds per game. She was also named the Big East Player and Freshman of the Year. Bueckers is the first freshman to win the AP Player of the Year award.
Another standout player for UConn this season was junior forward Olivia Nelson-Ododa. She was named the Big East Defensive Player of the Year and was also named to the All-Big East First Team. Nelson-Ododa averaged 13.6 points, 7.9 rebounds, and 2.6 blocks per game this season.
Sophomore guard Christyn Williams was also honored for her outstanding season. She was named to the All-Big East First Team and averaged 15.2 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game.
Additionally, UConn head coach Geno Auriemma was named the Big East Coach of the Year. This is the 16th time that Auriemma has received this award. He led UConn to their 19th Big East regular-season title and their 19th Big East tournament championship.
Overall, UConn had a very successful season, and these individual awards are a testament to the talent and hard work of the team’s players. With several key players returning for next season, UConn fans have reason to be excited for the future of the women’s basketball program.
