The UConn Women’s Basketball team wrapped up their 2020-2021 season with an impressive record of 28-2. It was a season that saw the team navigate through many challenges presented by the ongoing pandemic, including cancelations, schedule changes, and playing without fans in the stands. Nevertheless, Coach Geno Auriemma and his team remained focused on their goals and achieved remarkable success.

The Huskies are no strangers to success, having won 11 national championships under Auriemma’s leadership. However, this season started amidst much uncertainty due to the pandemic. The team’s schedule was significantly impacted, with many games canceled or rescheduled. Despite these challenges, the players and coaching staff remained committed to their goal of winning games and improving as a team.

One of the keys to the team’s success was their depth. Throughout the season, multiple players stepped up to make important contributions. Sophomore Paige Bueckers emerged as a superstar, winning numerous individual awards and leading the team in scoring and assists. But she had plenty of help from her teammates. Junior Olivia Nelson-Ododa was a force inside, while senior guard Christyn Williams provided a scoring punch. Freshman Aaliyah Edwards also played an important role, adding toughness and energy to the team.

Another critical factor was the team’s focus on defense. The Huskies held opponents to an average of just 49.4 points per game, ranking first in Division I. Their defense anchored them through difficult stretches during games, allowing them to come back and secure victories. The Huskies’ defense was particularly dominant in the NCAA Tournament, holding opponents to an average of just 49.8 points over their six games.

Of course, the Huskies’ success was also a tribute to the coaching staff, led by Auriemma, who was named the 2021 Naismith Women’s Coach of the Year. Auriemma has built a culture of success at UConn, and this season was no exception. Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, he and his staff kept the team focused and motivated, and made the necessary adjustments to help them succeed.

As the season came to a close, the Huskies celebrated their many accomplishments, including winning the Big East regular-season championship and advancing to the Final Four. Despite falling just short of their ultimate goal – a national championship – the Huskies have much to be proud of. They proved that they could overcome adversity and still compete at the highest level.

In the end, the UConn Women’s Basketball team’s impressive season served as a shining example of the resilience and determination required to succeed amidst unprecedented challenges. Through their hard work and dedication, they reminded us all that even in the most difficult of circumstances, greatness is still possible.
