The University of Connecticut women’s basketball team is a force to be reckoned with after shattering a record and securing the top seed in the March Madness tournament.

On Monday evening, the UConn Huskies dominated the South Florida Bulls in their final game of the regular season, finishing with a 20-1 overall record and a perfect 18-0 conference record. This impressive win was the team’s 144th consecutive victory in American Athletic Conference play, officially shattering the previous NCAA record of 131 straight conference wins held by the University of Tennessee Lady Volunteers.

The Huskies’ dominance in women’s basketball has been well-documented over the past two decades, with the team winning 11 NCAA championships since 2000 under head coach Geno Auriemma’s leadership. However, this latest record-breaking achievement solidifies their place in women’s basketball history as one of the most consistently dominant teams ever.

“Obviously, when you put yourself in comparison to a place like Tennessee with all the great things they’ve done, the great players, the championships they’ve won, all the streaks they’ve had, if you’re in that kind of territory, you must be doing something right,” Coach Auriemma stated.

The Huskies’ impressive play this season has earned them the top seed in the upcoming March Madness tournament, where they will look to continue their winning streak and secure yet another championship title. Senior guard Christyn Williams, who is averaging 16 points and over four rebounds per game this season, recognizes the team’s collective focus and motivation heading into the tournament.

“We’re really locked in right now and that’s super important going into the tournament,” Williams said. “We’re going to make sure everyone is in tune and knows what we’re trying to do.”

The March Madness tournament begins this week, with UConn facing off against the winner of the High Point-UNC Asheville play-in game on Sunday, March 21. As the top seed, the Huskies are poised for yet another deep run in the tournament, and fans will undoubtedly be tuning in to see if they can add another championship trophy to their already-impressive collection.
